Brand New Release — Today!
It Didn’t Start Out That Way by Judy Bridges
JUDY BRIDGES has been a Wisconsin Literary Community Luminary and is the author of a well-loved, nationally-recognized book on writing, Shut Up & Write! We are honored to publish her newest book, It Didn’t Start Out That Way: A Writer Remembers.
84 years in the making, 60 homes, 18 schools, and 3 husbands. In this collection of essays, Judy Bridges takes us on an intimate journey through her life, where Dad is a hero and a heartbreaker. Gram shoots her favorite husband in the pocket. A pick-up teaches a street-smart lesson. Bridges puts it all on the table. She sees her life and her characters from all sides, up and down, and brings them to life in this wildly honest memoir.
“Like the best memoirists, Judy Bridges writes with such candor, humor and clarity that I felt like I was going through life with her instead of reading about it.”
— CHRISTINA CLANCY, author of The Snowbirds, Shoulder Season, and The Second Home

Recently Released in February 2024
Okay, I realize that February isn’t so recent (my word, these days keep flying by!) But this book is well-worth mentioning.
We are honored to have been part of one particular project that follows the path of children’s books we’ve published in Ojibwemowin and English. These projects allow us to contribute to the revitalization of the language and to bring attention to Ojibwe culture, which is strongly rooted in the Great Lakes area. This time, we partnered with the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa to bring traditional Ojibwe stories, first told and translated in the 1970s, into one collection, Nanaboozhoo Babaamosed: Nanaboozhoo Went Walking and Other Stories from Grand Portage. The book includes original artwork created for the first publication, as well as an epilogue offering the reader more about the context and methodology.
One very important note about the book: The collection is a gift to students and teachers of Ojibwe who can study the words and language anytime but save most of the stories for reading in the winter when snow is on the ground. However, readers are encouraged to enjoy “Nishiime, the Lost Boy” and “The Boy Who Turned Into a Robin,” anytime of the year!
To support language revitalization …
Copies sold within the 1854 Treaty area and to students and teachers of Ojibwe cost only $5 each plus shipping. To take advantage of this deal, contact us directly. If you are outside the 1854 Treaty area and want to support language revitalization, you can purchase a copy online.
Any royalties earned from this book go back into the work we do with Grand Portage and for language revitalization.
Upcoming Publications
September 2024 Pastiche: A Memoir in Prose and Poetry by Marjorie Pagel
In fall, we’re releasing MARJORIE PAGEL’S third book, PASTICHE. Marjorie also stands out as a strong voice in Wisconsin literary circles. She’s had two short essays published in the Readers Write column of The Sun Magazine and has been a participant in the annual Woodland Pattern Poetry Marathon & Benefit for several years. She is a champion of fellow poets and a life-long learner of poetry and prose. So I am thrilled to bring you her new collection of work, which will feature artwork by Jean Berens, a local artist and creative extraordinaire!
As with a steady hand sewing scraps of cloth into beautiful quilt, so does Marjorie Pagel weave memory and story into a literary landscape of poetry and prose.
The cover above may change slightly, but the artwork will stay since it’s art designed by Marjorie’s grandson. So many cool aspects to this book. Keep an eye out for more updates about PASTICHE: pre-orders, book launch, all that fun stuff.
